Join Travis Audubon’s Sanctuary steward Chris Murray, with co-leaders Chris Gunter, Carol Ray and Celeste Treadway, at Travis Audubon’s Baker Sanctuary. Our target species will be Golden-cheeked Warblers on their breeding territories. Other warblers we might enjoy include Black-and-white Warblers returning to the hill country to breed, Nashville Warblers and Black-throated Green Warblers migrating through, and Orange-crowned warblers lingering after spending the winter here. Many of our summer residents will also be arriving in late March and early April—such as Summer Tanagers, White-eyed, Red-Eyed, and Hutton’s Vireos, Blue-gray Gnatcatchers, and Ash-throated and Great-crested Flycatchers. And of course, our year-round residents are not to be overlooked; we will definitely enjoy hearing Carolina Chickadees and Black-crested Titmice chattering noisily, Carolina and Bewick’s wrens fussing at our presence, and beautiful Northern Cardinals chipping constantly as we slowly walk through these shady woods. Baker has fairly dense oak/cedar canopy, so we will be doing a fair amount of ear birding to identify the birds around us. 

This team will bird on April 13 starting at 8 AM. Expect 3-4 hours of trail time, depending on the cooperativeness of the birds. We will try our hardest to get every participant on a Golden-cheeked Warbler, but ultimately it is up to the birds! 

Wear hiking shoes or sneakers with good traction. Trails at Baker are rocky and uneven, and a few areas can be slick and moderately rugged. We will have some short hill climbs. While our pace will be slow, these trails are not recommended for individuals with balance/footing concerns or other significant mobility challenges.

Bring binoculars, water and trail snacks, and dress appropriately for the weather. Bug repellent is recommended. 

Registration fee $50.00, limited to 20 participants. We will split into two separate groups for our hikes.
