After a two-year hiatus, coastal birding is part of Birdathon again! Dennis Palafox and John Bloomfield will be leading a group of Master Birders to High Island this April.

Kevin Karlson once said that the upper Texas coast from High Island to Galveston is the finest migratory location in North America. Not only will we see a plethora of neotropical migrants such as warblers, vireos, orioles, grosbeaks, thrushes, and buntings who have made the arduous 600-mile journey across the Gulf of Mexico from the Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico, but we’ll also see wading birds like herons, egrets, gulls, and terns, as well as shore birds like sandpipers, plovers, avocets, and many more species. The rookery at Smith Oaks is a beautiful site with Roseate Spoonbills, Great Egrets, Great Blue Herons, Tri-colored Herons and Little Blue Herons in the most colorful and elegant breeding plumage. The last time we did this trip in April 2019 and our total species count for the long weekend was 149!

The purpose of the trip will be to introduce Master Birders to the upper Texas coast if you’ve never been, and to raise money for Travis Audubon Birdathon 2022.
