Join Callen Inman and Cheryl McGrath for an adventure into UT’s Brackenridge Field Laboratory (BFL). Hugging the shores of Lake Austin, BFL is an 82-acre oasis of prime habitat for a wide variety of migrant and resident birds. BFL is in many ways a microcosm of central Texas. It contains upland juniper-oak woodlands, scrubby chaparral, meadows blanketed with wildflowers, several artificial and natural wetlands, and an extensive riparian woodland dominated by towering pecans. On a typical April morning, numerous songbird species can be found foraging in the riparian woodlands, which provide great stopover habitat for migrant Nashville, Black-and-white, and Black-throated Green Warblers and breeding habitat for Great Crested Flycatcher, Summer Tanager, Northern Parula, and Red-eyed Vireo. Throughout the property, dense tangles of mustang grape and catbrier are filled with migrants like Gray Catbird and Yellow-breasted Chat as well as a large number of breeding White-eyed Vireo and Northern Cardinal. Egrets, herons, ducks, and coots can be seen along the lakeshore. A morning of birding at BFL in late April usually yields between 40 and 50 species.

Special instructions: BFL is located at 2907 Lake Austin Blvd, just west of the intersection with Exposition Blvd and the new HEB (see map below). A UT parking permit is generally required for the BFL parking lot, but a temporary permit can be obtained by scanning the QR code located on the front door of the main building. Restrooms are located in the breezeway attached to the main building.
