Join Rene Bartos, Emma Bowar and Sharon Roy for a birding and poetry walk at Commons Ford Metro Park. As we bird, we’ll focus on noticing what we see and hear about the birds, their behavior and their habitats. At the end of our walk, we’ll gather and write some poetry about what we saw and heard. For this walk, we’ll focus on writing haikus and provide some guidelines and suggestions for how to do so. However, participants can write in whatever form appeals to them including free verse. No poetry writing or birding experience is necessary! Participants will have the opportunity to share their poetry with a partner or the group in a supportive, encouraging environment, with respect for those who prefer to listen over sharing.
The restored meadow at Commons Ford is a beautiful site for birding. Additionally, there are port-a-potties available at the trailhead/parking area, and a composting toilet along the walk. Drinking water is not available at the park, so please plan to bring your own water. Please plan to bring a camp chair, towel or blanket, writing utensil and paper/notebook/journal for the poetry writing portion. We’ll provide clipboards to use as a writing surface.
This walk is open to all birding and poetry writing skill levels. We have binoculars to lend anyone that doesn’t have a pair. Registration is required and limited to 10 participants. Contact Sharon at sharonmroy@gmail.com with any questions. A reminder email with relevant details will be sent a few days before the field trip.
Based on response and interest, it is our hope to offer future poetry birding walks that optentially will focus on instruction and use of other poetry forms.
We look forward to birding and writing with you!
