Flock Party Friday at Hornsby Bend

04/10/2026 08:00 AM - 10:00 AM CT

Description

It's Birdathon, and what better place to grow your life list than at Hornsby Bend? The Hornsby Bend Biosolids Management Plant is operated by Austin Water and consists of over 1,200 acres of property including ponds, woodlands, old pastures, and over 3.5 miles of Colorado River frontage. Hornsby Bend is widely recognized as one of Texas’s premier birding locations, with over 360 species recorded on-site over the years.

In the ponds, shorebirding is often very productive during spring migration, and the river trail, which includes riparian woodlands along the Colorado River, is good for birding any time of year. In the spring, you can expect to see Black-necked Stilts, American Golden-Plovers, Eared Grebes, a variety of sandpiper species, and more.

During this Flock Party Friday, you'll be guided to some of the best birding spots in the park. Hornsby Bend’s trails are flat and mostly wheelchair accessible (with some assistance).

Please meet at the Center for Environmental Research building, which is the first building on the right after you enter the front gate. All visitors are required to present ID at the guard house to enter Hornsby Bend. We'll have a Travis Audubon table set up near the parking lot if you'd like to chat with Travis Audubon staff or purchase some Bird of the Year merchandise. From there, the group will go on a bird walk led by our wonderful volunteers Lauren Wojcik and Rachel Zierzow.
