Join Rich Kostecke, Hill Country Conservancy's Director of Science and Stewardship (as well as Travis Audubon's Vice-president) for a special opportunity to visit Pecan Springs Karst Preserve.

Pecan Springs Karst Preserve, owned and stewarded by Hill Country Conservancy, protects 1,205 acres of ecologically sensitive land in northern Williamson County, 5 miles west of Jarrell, Texas. The property sits within the Edwards Aquifer Recharge Zone at the gateway to the Texas Hill Country and protects 4 spring complexes that contribute to Salado Creek, numerous karst features (including 7 caves), and habitat for threatened and endangered species such as the Golden-cheeked Warbler, Salado Salamander, and Tricolored Bat. A full bird list can be found on eBird (Bar Charts - eBird). Time permitting, we may visit the nearby Chatham Tract, 208-acres generously donated to Hill Country Conservancy this past December, which offers somewhat different birding habitats.

While some of the Preserve roads have recently been improved, higher clearance vehicles are still recommended as we may wander into more remote areas with rougher ranch roads. We will likely drive to several spots within the Preserve, making short hikes at each stop. Hiking will generally be on level ground but may be through some overgrown and weedy areas.

For the safety of wildlife and the quality of the experience, pets are not permitted on field trips or bird walks. We appreciate your understanding.
