Celebrate spring birds and wildflowers with a special birding adventure at Travis County’s Reimers Ranch Park — a breathtaking 2,400-acre preserve along the Pedernales River at the gateway to the Texas Hill Country.
Guided by local bird guide Rachel Zierzow and wildlife photographer Connor Teseny, we’ll explore the park in search of spring migrants, soaring raptors, and distinctive Western species, all set against a vibrant tapestry of blooming wildflowers.
We’ll gather at the Pavilion parking area to listen to the morning chorus as the day begins. Our leisurely three-mile loop will wind through diverse habitats and scenic overlooks along the Pedernales River, following the Granite Trail to the River Access Trail and returning via the Multi-Use Trail. Along the way, we’ll watch for species such as Pyrrhuloxia, Vermillion Flycatcher, Black-throated Sparrow, Verdin, Rufous-crowned Sparrow, Canyon and Rock Wrens, Spotted and Canyon Towhees, Loggerhead Shrike, and more.
For those who’d like to continue exploring, we can caravan to Turkey Loop at the end of the park road after the scheduled walk. From there, additional trails offer opportunities to seek out even more Hill Country specialties.
Please bring binoculars and plenty of drinking water. Wear sturdy, closed-toe shoes, sun protection, and long pants (recommended for prickly vegetation). A hat and snacks are also encouraged to keep you comfortable throughout the morning.
ADA-accessible bathrooms are located at the Pavilion parking area and other parking areas have porta-potties and/or restrooms. The majority of trails are level, with packed granite gravel or packed dirt, with some areas of pavement. The walk down to the river has a short but steep hill to descend and climb back up (this part can be skipped for those that don’t care to do the steep hill). About 48 hours before the walk, registrants will be sent a reminder with trip details and any updates. For questions prior to the walk, contact Rachel at rachel.zierzow@gmail.com or 512-217-1259.
The entrance fee into the park is $5.00 per person, $3.00 for anyone 62 and older, and free for disabled veterans and children 12 years and younger. **THE PARK ONLY ACCEPTS CASH.** Please consult park website for any additional information.
