Walk Description

Saturday, April 11th: 9-11 AM Big Sit with Birdability—Save your space now!

SOUTH SIDE: MEET AT 12221 Lime Creek Road for this event.

Join Birdability Captain Eric Clow and field trip leader Carol Todzia in a Big Sit near the historic bunkhouse on the south side of Baker Sanctuary. This event is accessible and open to all and is intentionally welcoming to individuals with any type of mobility limitation or other disability. No hiking required to enjoy the birds that grace the upland entry area of Baker with their beautiful presence! Prepare to relax as we let the birds come to us!

We will keep our eyes and ears open for our famous nesting Golden-cheeked Warblers along with those warblers who are just migrating through. Other possibilities include vireos, flycatchers, and a variety of raptors.

No restrooms are available at this location, so please plan accordingly.

Access Info: The surface of the parking lot and big sit location is relatively level and composed of short, hardpacked grass with sporadic bumps. There are no paved surfaces. (See photos below.)

As our big sit spot is immediately beside the parking area, participants will need to traverse only a short stretch of the grassy surface to reach it. Wheelchair users are also welcome to unload and/or park as close to the big sit location as needed. Walking folks with balance issues may want to use a cane, walker, walking stick, or other mobility aid.

Our big sit spot is nestled against juniper woodlands and partially shaded, but we still encourage everyone to bring a hat and sunscreen. There is also a picnic bench for walking folks although we recommend bringing a camp or lawn chair of your own as that may be more comfortable. There are no drinking fountains at this location, so please bring your own water as well.

While Baker Sanctuary is generally free of human noises, this location is right beside Lime Creek Road, which experiences intermittent, sometimes loud, car and motorcycle engine sounds.

Walk Leaders
Eric Clow
Eric Clow has been a Travis Audubon member since 2022 and an active Birdability field trip leader, dedicated to making birding more accessible and welcoming. A thoughtful observer of both birds and the world around him, Eric brings curiosity, reflection, and care for conservation into everything he does.
Carol Todzia began birding in 2021, and jumped in with both feet, becoming a TAS Master birder and most recently completing the inaugural TAS Field Trip Leader training workshop. We are excited to have her add her skills and enthusiasm to our Baker events this spring.
