Walk Description

Sunday, April 19th: 6-9 PM Evening Big Sit with Birdability—Save your space now!

NORTH SIDE: 12308 Lime Creek Road

Enjoy a relaxed, seated evening experience with field trip leaders Eric Clow and Miranda Flores at the Jackie Arnold Educational Pavilion. This event is accessible and open to all and is intentionally welcoming to individuals with any type of mobility limitation or other disability. During the last couple hours of the day, you will enjoy watching Chimney Swifts, all of our usual hill country resident birds, and you might even have a Golden-cheeked Warbler singing in the trees surrounding the pavilion. At and after sunset (8 PM), we will watch for Common Nighthawks, and listen for Chuckwill’s Widows, owls, and nocturnal insects and amphibians.

Accessible restrooms are available at the pavilion.

Access Info: The surface of the parking lot is a mix of pebbly hardpacked dirt and patches of grass, and it is bumpy in places. The surface is rougher than any other location Birdability has visited in the last few years, but it is very hardpacked and traversable by most motorized and manual wheelchairs. It is also a short roll (about 75 feet) over mostly level ground from the parking area to the paved pavilion where we will have our big sit. The last 25 or so feet is a path of decomposed granite that is wide enough for wheelchairs. (See photos below.)

Walking folks may want to wear comfortable shoes to traverse the distance from the parking lot to the pavilion. Anyone with balance issues may want to use a cane, walker, walking stick, or other mobility aid.

The pavilion has a smooth paved surface as well as accessible restrooms. It is also covered to shield us from the late-day sun. If you don’t use a wheelchair, be sure to bring a camp or lawn chair that is comfortable to sit in for a few hours. There are no drinking fountains at this location, so please bring your own water as well.

This location is a little more insulated from Lime Creek Road, so we expect less traffic noise. But there may still be occasional car and motorcycle engine sounds.
