Birdability Outing at Richard Moya Park
Description
This field trip is free for everyone, but registration is required.

Join Virginia Rose and Eric Clow for a morning of accessible birding at Richard Moya Park. One of Austin’s oldest and most popular parks, Richard Moya boasts two miles of paved hiking trails that wind beneath massive pecan trees and run along Onion Creek. It’s a great place to observe flycatchers, woodpeckers, cuckoos, tanagers, vireos, and more! We also expect a variety of wading birds, Eastern Bluebirds, and Red-shouldered Hawks.
This outing is designed for birders of all abilities and skill levels. All are welcome!
We will meet near the entrance at 10001 Burleson Road, Austin, TX 78719. There is ample accessible parking including van-accessible parking spaces. There are also restrooms, but they are not very wheelchair accessible.
The trails are wide, paved, and smooth with a few moderate slopes. There are a few picnic tables along the trail but not many. We will wander for about two hours or until folks get tired. We may walk one mile or more. Folks are also welcome to continue birding past 10 AM.
*For anyone who would prefer a stationary birding experience, we have a guide that will stay near the parking lot and offer a big sit. This will also be available to anyone who gets tired after wandering the trails. If you plan to join the big sit, you may want to bring an outdoor chair.
Note: It will be HOT! Please dress and plan accordingly. Everyone should bring a hat, water, sunscreen, and whatever else you use to stay cool. If you are especially sensitive to the heat, you may prefer to bird with us in the fall. There is also frequent air traffic at this park.
If you can walk, you should wear comfortable shoes. Please bring binoculars and/or whatever other birding tools you use. (We will provide loaner binoculars for those who need them.) In the case of inclement weather, we will contact you before 7 AM on the day of the outing with a cancel notice.
Registration for this outing is required and limited to 15 participants (plus additional attendants if you bring someone to help you participate). If you have any additional access needs or have other questions, please email Eric Clow at birdcitynews@gmail.com.
For the safety of wildlife and the quality of the experience, dogs (other than service animals) are not permitted on field trips or bird walks. We appreciate your understanding.
