Join Shelia Hargis and Hays County Parks staff for a bird walk at Jacob’s Well Natural Area in Wimberley, Texas. This stunning location features a unique habitat surrounding the iconic artesian spring, which feeds Cypress Creek and supports a diverse range of bird species. Multiple ecosystems are represented in this park including mixed Oak/Juniper, Savannah/Prairie, and Aquatic/Riparian. We’ll explore the different habitats while keeping an eye out for interesting bird behavior. Most birds will be engaged in breeding behavior, so hopefully we’ll see adults feeding their new fledglings.
Parking: Both admission and parking are free. Ample parking is available at the Jacob’s Well Natural Area parking lot.
Amenities: Restrooms are accessible on-site, and picnic areas are available for those who wish to enjoy a meal after the walk. Birding station, labyrinth, loose parts play area, geocaching, Nature Center Exhibits are open to the public Sat. & Sun. 10am-3pm.
Accessibility: A few trails are composed of crushed granite and are considered accessible. The trail down to Jacob’s Well requires visitors to hike down several staircases and along natural surfaces. That portion of the trail is not accessible to wheelchairs, strollers, or other mobility aids. Please contact Katherine Sturdivant at katherine.sturdivant@co.hays.tx.us if you have any mobility issues – these walks can be tailored.
Registration for this event is free, but we suggest a donation of $10 to assist with furthering our efforts of inspiring conservation through birding. This event is limited to 12 registrants. Please contact Shelia Hargis at shelia.hargis@gmail.com with any questions about this event.
Shelia Hargis has been birding for over 25 years and was inspired early on by Travis Audubon field trips, developing a passion for both bird identification and behavior. A past president of Travis Audubon and the Texas Ornithological Society and recipient of Travis Audubon’s 2020 Victor Emanuel Conservation Award, she brings deep experience, enthusiasm, and a love of all birds—common or rare—to every walk she leads.
