Join Rachel Zierzow and Anna Stalcup to find birds and observe their behavior at Barton Springs and Zilker Park, an amazing place to go birding close to downtown! Native trees, shrubs, and wildflowers, and natural spring water dominate the landscape and provide excellent habitat for many different species of birds. As the seasons change, so do the birds, so you’ll want to come on this walk frequently to see what’s around.
This bird walk is ideal for beginners, but all levels are welcome. We have binoculars to lend anyone that doesn’t have a pair. Our walk will total 1 mile in about 2 hours, making our way through Bartons Springs and adjacent parkland to listen to and look for resident birds, migrants, and flyovers. Terrain is mostly flat (dirt trails and sidewalks) with one area at Barton Springs that is uneven/rocky. If needed, we can take an alternate route around the pool to avoid the rocks. In winter, we may walk down the trail a bit to watch the ducks at Lou Neff Point.

For the safety of wildlife and the quality of the experience, dogs (other than service animals) are not permitted on field trips or bird walks. We appreciate your understanding.

You could say that I was born into birding because my mom is a birder. However, I didn’t really start paying attention to the birds around me until my mom gave me a field guide when I was in my 30’s. Now I love to bird at my home in Bastrop County in addition to Austin and places around the world. It’s a lot of fun helping lead field trips and meeting wonderful people.
