Birdability Walk at Champion Park

Update: The recent Austin Birdability newsletter that was emailed out gave a start time of 9:00 am. However this is incorrect! This TAS registration page is correct. The timing for this event is 8:00 am to 10:00 am.

Join Virginia Rose and Eric Clow for a morning of accessible birding at Champion Park in Williamson County. This park offers a variety of habitat, from wide open grassland that attracts sparrows and Northern Harriers to deep woods where songbirds abound. We hope to catch migrating warblers as well as some local favorites! Champion is also a great place to find our three most common species of woodpecker, Downy, Red-bellied, and Ladder-backed.

This outing is designed for birders of all abilities and skill levels. All are welcome!

We will meet near the entrance at 3830 Brushy Creek Road, Cedar Park, TX 78613, There are several accessible parking spaces, and we can assist with other parking needs that may arise. There are also wheelchair-accessible restrooms.

We will wander a lovely paved trail beneath big shade trees and with views of Brushy Creek and beautiful limestone ledges. We may walk one mile or more. Folks are also welcome to continue birding past 10 AM. If folks get tired, there is a nice shaded pavilion with picnic tables near the parking area.

Note: It will still be HOT! Please dress and plan accordingly. Everyone should bring a hat, water, sunscreen, and whatever else you use to stay cool. If you are especially sensitive to the heat, you may prefer to bird with us later this fall.

If you can walk, you should wear comfortable shoes. Please bring binoculars and/or whatever other birding tools you use. (We will provide loaner binoculars for those who need them.) In the case of inclement weather, we will contact you before 7 AM on the day of the outing with a cancel notice.

Eric Clow has been a Travis Audubon member since 2022 and an active Birdability field trip leader, dedicated to making birding more accessible and welcoming. A thoughtful observer of both birds and the world around him, Eric brings curiosity, reflection, and care for conservation into everything he does.

Virginia Rose asks: What in the world is more fun than being outside all day spying on birds? Being a field trip leader allows me to do that with fun, interesting, and enthusiastic people.
