Field Trip Leaders
Description

The Wildflower Center calls these classes, and they are free to TAS members. Participants need to register through the WFC website, but leaders do not. These classes started in Fall 2022.

One or two birding volunteers will help with the monthly walk that highlights birds (the volunteers' task) and plants (currently mostly done by Julie Marcus, a retired Wildflower Center horticulturist.) A plant knowledgeable volunteer/staff member from the WFC will help with the walks when Julie is not available.) Currently walks are not offered in June- August.

Knowledge of native plants is a plus but not required. TAS volunteers will learn more about birds and the plants they depend on, and this is a fun opportunity. If you are new to the importance of native plants to birds I recommend you read any of Douglas Tallamy’s books such as Bringing Nature Home, and The Nature of Oaks. His most recent is How Can I Help? Saving Nature with your Yard. All are available at the Austin Public Library. Visit the Wildflower Center too.

Volunteer(s) meet the group at the entry kiosk a little before 8. A Wildflower Center volunteer handles check in and stays with the group during the walk and retrieves loaned binoculars which the Wildflower Center provides. The walks pretty much stop at 10 a.m. If they run over a bit, just make sure the participants who need to leave know the route back.

The area that the group explores can change - sometimes visiting the family garden area, the Texas Arboretum, or the research area. Group size varies from approx. 12 to 20. The group is a mix of new-to-birding folks, out-of-towners and regulars who have been attending these walks every month.

Please keep an eBird checklist and be sure to share it with Delaney Harris, the WFC Education Coordinator. dtharris@wildflower.org   She will then share it with the group in a follow-up email. If participants saw a plant being used by a bird, by all means mention that in the comments on the eBird list so folks can build their plant-bird connections.

Contact Jane Tillman or Delaney if you have questions.

Committees | New Volunteer Application
Description

Travis Audubon relies on several vital committees to carry out our important work, with a focus on youth programs, advocacy, education, field trips, and specific projects like the Purple Martin and Chimney Swift initiatives. Volunteers are key to these efforts, attending committee meetings every other month, and have the option to take on more time-intensive tasks, allowing them to make an even greater impact on our mission.
